Ok it’s Sunday morning, about 7:30 am PST. I didn’t get everything done last night as I wanted to, so there are a few small things left to do this morning, such as getting some breakfast, packing up the computer monitors, loading the car… fairly simple stuff. Which is a good thing because I plan on getting to Arcosanti at around noonish. The funny thing is, while I am taking less than half the gear I took last year… my car will be packed much tighter… Anyway peace out
Ok here it is Saturday night before Different Skies 2008, and it’s time to take stock. We’ve had some difficulties already and the gang isn’t even on stage yet.
I am frantically finishing packing things up, in the hopes that all I have to do tomorrow morning is load the car up, fill the tank with gas and take off
So after Mike’s show “Spiral” last night, Doug and I were talking and I happened to go to MSNBC to check the temps…. and I happen to notice a big red attention grabbing red box over on the right.
“George Carlin….Dead at 71″
Man, what a crappy way to start off the week…
So long George, thanks for the laughs…
Well I guess I should update this blog a wee bit more often eh?
The biggest problem I’ve had is that nothing much is new. Well ok that’s not entirely accurate either. StillStream continues to grow, Darrell is taking a hiatus from his Saturday night show Blue Water Drift Dive, and in his place we’ve added two new shows; Zen Caffeine, hosted by David ‘DK’ Herpich, and Spiral, hosted by Mike Metlay.
On the Different Skies side of things, we’re still not sure what sort of shelter we will have this year, As of the 14th of May there wasn’t any, and the stage was awash in sunlight, which will suck in September. The gear and people would suffer dearly from a week of being in the sun, and the possibility of rain
The City Skies event was just phenomenal.
There was so much talent and diversity it was amazing. Of particular note were the performances by some of the Different Skies alumni.
Tony Geber/Cypress Rosewood - As always a very spiritual and grounding performance of Indian flutes interspersed with guitar and synths for an other-worldy performance, perfect for a Friday night chill out.
Paul Vnuk Jr. - Man what can I say about Paul, he is a walking talking metronome. His unwavering sense of timing in the use of hand percussion and loops, along with expert use of analog synths, and vocalizations can really get your internal rhythm going, and make your feet bounce.
Emerald Adrift - Aka David K “DK” Herpich - Hidden brilliance. That sums up David’s performance. He did three separate and distinct pieces, The first of which was an interpretive piece I believe based on Pripyat, an abandoned town outside of Chernobyl. His second piece was dedicated to electronic music Professor Karlheinz Stockhausen, arguably one of the fathers of electronic music. His third piece however is one to take particular note of, it started off with subtle arpeggios, then he hit us square in the chest with a wall of sound so complex, yet with crystal clear detail it was astonishing.
The entire festival was just fantastic, and I must take a moment and thank a couple of people.
Thank you and Happy Birthday to Jim Combs, City Skies organizer and birthday boy.
Thank you to all the performers who attended. The performances were all outstanding.
And thirdly, a HUGE Thank you to our new traveling host on StillStream.com Mike Metlay, who despite technical difficulties brought the listeners of StillStream.com an awesome and diverse musical event.
Ok….. now it’s time for the day job
Well it seems the best laid plans are the ones that don’t work..
Ok so the original studio set up I had, will not work for beans. There just isn’t room to move freely with the initial way I had things setup. Soooooo off to setup B.
What does this mean?
Well it means that I won’t be updating the live archives for another week or so, and it also means I won’t be able to update the playlist archive for a wee bit longer.
But, the good news is I will be having Friday night off, as StillStream will be covering City Skies live both Friday and Saturday nights! Since Darrell “Palancar” Burgan and myself won’t be present =( our live coverage will be hosted by non other that Mr. Different Skies himself, Mike Metlay!
Be sure to tune in as Jim Combs has put together a fantastic line up of electronic artists from around the world, this is definately a not-to-be missed event!
Ok, the first tidbit of gear pr0n is up, it’s most of the softsynths that I use on a regular basis, there will be more to come, and I will also be working on the layout, because well…. I don’t really like how it is for now…..
Well, good news, after several weeks of frustration, unpacking, organizing, and cleaning and all sorts of spring time related fun the studio is just about complete.
Racks are loaded and wired for power & sound, keyboard stands are going up and getting loaded. Soon I shall have loads and loads of gear pr0n for all of you to view and drool over. Of course, by the time I complete all of that, it will be time to take it all apart, and begin getting ready for Different Skies 2008
There has been a rumor floating around since before Different Skies 2007, about a certain garment of “clothing.” Today I was unfortunate enough to open my email, only to receive an actual image of it, in all its hideous glory.
I hereby present to you, The Sparkly Sequined Jock Strap of Doooooooooooom!

Mere words can not describe the sheer nauseating power this image creates…….. Behold……
